0Religious life & Shabbat
Playa del Carmen, at last count, has 8 kosher restaurants, 2 Chabad houses, a kosher bakery and a kosher market. Plus, each of the Chabad houses hosts weekly communal Shabbat meals.
For those times when you don't want to have to eat out, though, you may request a kosher kit for the duration of your stay, consisting of meat, dairy and pareve bins that contain all dishes, pots, pans, glasses, and flatware that you should need. Additionally, for Shabbat, we provide a blech, kumkum, timers, night lights, bentchers, Kiddush cups and electric candles (sorry, no fire allowed in the hotel). Door locks are electronic, but you can ask for a Shabbat key from the front desk.
As this unit rents to kosher and non-kosher guests, we do not vouch for the kashrut of anything provided by the hotel, including the toaster, blender, coffee maker, microwave or oven. You may kasher the oven using the self cleaning function or the microwave at your discretion, but we ask that you please consider the dishwasher off limits and wash everything by hand in the double sink.
Rather than have each guest pay an additional $1000 to have a Chabad rabbi come and kasher everything for your stay, we rely upon the integrity of our guests to maintain the status of our kosher kit. At the end of your stay, please return all items to the appropriate bins in at least as good condition as you would hope to find them in yourself. That means all items are clean, DRY and neatly packed in the proper bins to ensure the bins can be properly closed.
The hotel staff is only responsible for bringing the kosher kit to you and for removing it when it's done. They are not involved in cleaning or packing the items. Failure to return the kosher items to their proper SEALED bins prior to check out may result in an additional cleaning, kashering and replacement fee, so please ensure that you pack up everything properly before you leave.
Please note that though the hotel does provide a continental breakfast each day for all guests, the prepared foods are not kosher. Bottled water suitable for drinking is located in a dispenser in the courtyard kitchen.
