Camp Avoda

Brotherhood, Jewish Values, Spirit and Fun!

Location: Plymouth County, MA, United States

Organizer: Camp Avoda

About

Avoda is a Jewish sports camp for boys. Avoda brotherhood, leadership, spirit, and tradition are among the most distinctive and unique aspects of the Avoda experience. Your son will arrive with uncertain expectations and leave with indelible memories. Campers have fun in a safe and supportive environment while building confidence and character. They will learn to work with others to solve problems and overcome challenges, and be valued for who they are.

There's so much that Avoda can offer a Jewish boy. You'll arrive with uncertain expectations and leave with indelible memories. At Avoda, you'll discover talents you didn't know you had, and improve your skills in the activities you love. You'll build confidence and character, learn to work together to solve problems and overcome challenges, and be valued for who you are.

We know what Avoda will do for you. But what will you do while at Avoda? After all, it takes great campers to make a camp great. We look forward to having your spirit, your energy, and your voice at Camp Avoda. Sure, we are proud of our program, but your participation is what will make our program special.

Summer camp is a team sport, and whether by bunk, division, team, or the whole camp together, we support each other, learn from each other, and feel connected to each other. Camp pride and Avoda spirit are forged naturally from daily teamwork, shared experiences, and friendships that are easily made yet stand the test of time.

When our campers and staff see our sign at the end of Gibbs Road, or wear their Avoda t-shirts or beanies, there's a strong sense of belonging and identity that makes every day at Avoda special "“ and keeps the campfires burning in their hearts all winter long. That's true brotherhood, and that's what Avoda is all about.

Rooms & accommodation

Campers live in fully screened cabins that generally house eight to 10 campers, plus two staff members and a CIT. Two bunks make up a cabin where the bunks share bathrooms and hallways. All cabins have built-in closets, small chests of drawers, and modern bathrooms. There are two hot water shower facilities with private stalls

Kashrut & dining

Kashrut authority: basic · basic

Our Chef, Scott Rubeck, provides the Avoda family with nutritional and consistently, great food. Don't miss our great weekly outdoor barbeques (You don't want to miss our corn-on-the-cob and freshly baked brownies!). All of our meals are kosher, and we can accommodate all campers' dietary needs including food allergies.

In addition to our chef prepared meals, we always have fresh fruit, a salad bar, fresh baked goods and other camper favorites! Every afternoon and evening, we also have Snack Time where campers and counselors take a break from the day's activities and enjoy a quick bite to eat.

Religious life & Shabbat

Jewish values and practices infuse daily life at Avoda. All our meals are kosher and each begins with the hamotzi and ends with the birkat hamazon blessings. Shabbat services are held on Friday nights and Saturday mornings in our beautiful lakeside outdoor chapel site amid towering pines. Havdalah and Tisha B'Av services are both meaningful and memorable, as is our annual trip to Israel for staff and alumni. We are proud to be part of K'lal Yisrael, the larger Jewish community.

Activities & entertainment

Team Sports

One of the greatest aspects of Avoda is the camaraderie that stems from its team sports. Everyone participates, everyone plays, and everyone pulls together. Whether instruction, competition, or simply pickup games, our athletics program is all about the love of the game.

Avoda has both intramural leagues (one of our most popular programs within camp) and intercamp meets, where we play other camps in New England. Team sports include softball, basketball, tennis, swimming, and soccer. There are a number of tournaments for each sport throughout the summer, some at Avoda, and "away games," held at different camps.

Arts

At Avoda we have many ways for campers to explore and express their creativity. We offer Arts and Crafts, Woodworking, Photography, Video Production and more, all taught by our awesome specialists.

Adventure

With trained staff and the right equipment, there's no challenge that a determined camper can't meet. That includes camping under the stars, navigating the woods in our wilderness elective, tackling our ropes and adventure course, and climbing our 50-foot-high rock wall.

Waterfront

Operating in accordance with American Red Cross standards, our waterfront program on Lake Tispaquin provides instruction and recreation in swimming, sailing, windsurfing, waterskiing, kneeboarding, canoeing, kayaking, rowing, tubing, and fishing.

Color War

Talk to an Avoda alumnus in his 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, or 70s, and he can probably tell you the names of his Color War teams and even sing some of their songs. This second-month, all-camp competition celebrates the culmination of the summer, and captures the true essence of teamwork and Avoda spirit.

For children & families

Our administrative staff comprises trained professionals in such critical fields as family counseling, social work, teaching, and healthcare. We don't simply manage the camp's daily operations, we set and uphold high standards for all our staff and are directly and quickly involved when an issue needs to be resolved

Camp Avoda's staff is how we differentiate ourselves from other camps. Almost all our counselors were once Avoda campers and successful graduates of the Avoda Counselor-in-Training (C.I.T.) program. We have a camper-to-counselor ratio of 4:1. Wr have Israeli staff as well to round out the Jewish cultural experience. We are very proud of our counselors "“ and we should be, because each one was hand-picked based on his experience, maturity, skills, and values. They are your son's mentors, teachers, coaches, and friends.
