About the area

Found at 11 Oakfield Road in the B29 area of Birmingham, the center is strategically positioned near the University of Birmingham campus. This neighborhood, primarily Selly Oak, has been a traditional residential area for many Jewish students and faculty members over the decades. Its location ensures that those connected to the university have easy access to a Jewish support network without traveling far from their studies.

Birmingham itself holds a distinguished place in British Jewish history. While the community is more dispersed than those in London or Manchester, the presence of Chabad in the B29 area provides a necessary focal point for the southern part of the city. The area is well-connected by local rail and bus links, making it accessible for those staying in the city center or surrounding suburbs like Edgbaston or Moseley.

Nearby Jewish landmarks

Situated in the Selly Oak area, the Chabad House is within walking distance of the University of Birmingham, which historically hosts a significant number of Jewish students from across the UK and internationally. This proximity makes it a central hub for student life, particularly during the academic terms when the community is most active.

The wider Birmingham area is home to several historic Jewish landmarks. To the north lies the Singers Hill Synagogue, a Grade II* listed building that stands as a testament to the city's long-standing Jewish heritage. While the Chabad House provides a more localized collegiate atmosphere, its location allows for easy access to these broader communal resources and historical sites within the city center.

For those interested in exploring the region, the Chabad House serves as a reliable base. Birmingham’s central location in the West Midlands provides a convenient starting point for visiting other historic UK Jewish communities or finding quiet spaces for reflection within the city's many parks and botanical gardens located just a short distance from the campus.

What to expect

Visitors to Chabad of Birmingham Campuses will find a multifaceted facility designed to meet various communal needs. The center houses a library for Jewish study and serves as a venue for regular Torah classes and adult education. The environment is particularly tailored to the modern Jewish experience, blending traditional learning with contemporary community life.

In addition to spiritual guidance, the center offers practical lifecycle support. This includes services such as mezuzah and tefillin checking, marriage preparation, and kitchen koshering. For many, the highlight of the week is the Shabbat hospitality, where students and visitors gather for a traditional meal and communal connection in a home-like setting.

The atmosphere at the Chabad House is one of inclusivity and support. Whether you are looking for a place to pray, a quiet corner to study a Jewish text, or advice on maintaining a kosher lifestyle in Birmingham, the center provides a dedicated staff and a wealth of resources to assist you.
