About this listing

Chabad Nicaragua serves as a vital anchor for Jewish life in the coastal town of San Juan Del Sur. This welcoming Chabad House provides a dedicated space for locals and international travelers to connect with their heritage while navigating the beautiful scenery of the Rivas region. Whether you are looking for a place to pray, a communal Shabbat meal, or guidance on maintaining Jewish traditions while abroad, this center offers a "home away from home" atmosphere.

Led by Rabbi David Atar, the center focuses on making Jewish practice accessible and meaningful for everyone. From youth programming and family-oriented activities to adult education and Torah classes, the center ensures that the flame of Jewish life remains bright in Nicaragua. Its presence is especially significant for the many Jewish backpackers and tourists who frequent the area's famous surfing beaches and eco-tourism sites.

About the area

The Chabad House is situated in San Juan del Sur, a vibrant port town on Nicaragua’s southwest coast. Located near "el frente de la casa de la ceramica," the center is positioned within the heart of the community, making it easily reachable for those staying in the various hostels, hotels, and vacation rentals that dot the bay. The town itself serves as a gateway for travelers moving between Costa Rica and the northern parts of Nicaragua.

While Nicaragua does not have a large, established Jewish neighborhood like those found in major North American or European cities, San Juan del Sur has become a focal point for Jewish travelers in the country. The Chabad center provides the necessary infrastructure—such as access to a synagogue and kosher support—that would otherwise be difficult to find in this part of Central America. Its location allows visitors to balance their spiritual needs with the adventure and relaxation that the Pacific coast provides.

Nearby Jewish landmarks

San Juan del Sur is primarily known for its stunning coastline and surf-friendly waters. Visitors to the Chabad center are within reach of the town’s famous crescent-shaped bay, which is lined with local shops and small businesses. A short trip from the center leads to the trail for the Christ of the Mercy statue, which offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the surrounding Rivas department.

For those interested in exploring the natural beauty of the region, Maderas Beach and Marsella Beach are well-known destinations for surfing and relaxation. The area’s relaxed atmosphere makes it a popular stop for backpackers and Jewish travelers journeying through Central America. While the Jewish infrastructure in Nicaragua is concentrated in specific hubs, the presence of Chabad ensures that travelers do not have to compromise on their religious requirements while enjoying the tropical landscape.

What to expect

Visitors can expect a warm, inclusive environment where Jewish identity is celebrated. The center offers daily and Shabbat synagogue services, providing a space for tefillah (prayer) in a communal setting. Beyond the sanctuary, the facility includes a library and spaces dedicated to learning, ranging from Bar and Bat Mitzvah instruction to marriage preparation and general adult education.

In addition to spiritual services, the center addresses practical Jewish needs. This includes a Mikveh on-site and services such as mezuzah and tefillin checking. For those concerned about dietary requirements, the center offers kosher assistance and kitchen koshering services. The hospitality extends to logistical support as well, with a free loan fund (Gemach) and hospital visitation services available for those in need. The environment is designed to be family-friendly, featuring hands-on holiday programming and preschool activities that engage the younger generation in Jewish traditions.
