About this listing

Chabad of South Austin serves as a vital anchor for Jewish life in the southern corridor of Texas's capital city. Under the leadership of Rabbi Mendel Hertz, this center provides a warm and inclusive environment where both local residents and travelers can find a sense of community and spiritual growth. The center is dedicated to making Jewish traditions accessible and meaningful through a variety of programs and personal support services.

Located on Oak Boulevard, the center bridges the gap for many who find themselves away from the more concentrated Jewish neighborhoods in North Austin. Whether you are looking for a place to pray, a Torah class to attend, or guidance on maintaining a kosher lifestyle while in Austin, this Chabad house acts as a dedicated resource. It functions not just as a synagogue, but as a community hub for education and social connection.

About the area

Situated in the 78735 area, Chabad of South Austin is conveniently located near the intersection of Highway 290 and MoPac Expressway. This positioning makes it an ideal stop for those traveling toward the South Lamar district or those heading out to explore the nearby Hill Country. The neighborhood is characterized by a blend of suburban calm and proximity to Austin's famous natural parks.

The Jewish community in Austin has grown significantly over the last decade. While historically much of this growth was centered around the Northwest Hills and the Dell Jewish Community Campus, Chabad of South Austin provides a necessary presence for the expanding population in the southern half of the city. This location is particularly relevant for professionals working in Austin's booming tech sector and families residing in the Oak Hill and Southwest neighborhoods.

Nearby Jewish landmarks

Austin is a city known for its vibrant culture, but for the Jewish visitor, South Austin offers a quieter, more residential pace while remaining accessible to major landmarks. A short drive away, the Dell Jewish Community Campus serves as a massive hub for the greater Austin area, housing the Jewish Community Center and various community organizations.

Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the proximity to the Barton Creek Greenbelt, which offers miles of hiking trails and scenic limestone bluffs. For those visiting during the week, the area is also close to various grocery stores like H-E-B, which often carries select kosher shelf-stable goods and frozen items to supplement your stay.

While South Austin is less densely populated with Jewish institutions than the Northwest Hills area, it serves as a critical gateway for those staying near the downtown tech hubs or the scenic Texas Hill Country. The presence of Chabad ensures that even in this part of the city, traditional Jewish life remains vibrant and accessible.

What to expect

When visiting Chabad of South Austin, you can expect an atmosphere defined by genuine hospitality and a non-judgmental approach to Jewish practice. The facility serves multiple roles, housing a synagogue for regular services and a classroom space for adult education and youth programs. It is an environment where questions are welcomed and individual heritage is celebrated.

Families traveling with children will find a range of programming designed for younger ages, from "Mommy and Me" sessions to holiday-specific workshops. The center also provides essential religious services such as mezuzah and tefillin checking, as well as kitchen koshering assistance for those moving into the area or looking to upgrade their home observance.

Practical support for travelers is a hallmark of the Chabad experience here. From helping visitors navigate the local kosher landscape to providing a place for one-on-one study, the staff and community members strive to ensure that every visitor feels at home.
