About the area The Chabad House is positioned at 1122 Ghetto Vecchio, within the Cannaregio district. This specific neighborhood is world-renowned as the site of the original Jewish Ghetto, established in 1516. Walking through the narrow alleyways of the Ghetto Vecchio and Ghetto Nuovo, visitors are surrounded by centuries of history, marked by "skyscrapers" (tall residential buildings) that were unique to this confined area.
Being located in the Ghetto means the center is within immediate reach of many of Venice's most significant Jewish landmarks. This location allows visitors to experience an authentic atmosphere where Jewish tradition is woven into the very fabric of the city.
Accessing the center is straightforward via Venice's water transport system. Visitors can take the Vaporetto (water bus) to the Guglie or San Marcuola stops, both of which are a short walk from the Ghetto gates. The proximity to these transport hubs makes it easy for travelers staying in other parts of the city to reach the center for services, classes, or social gatherings.
Nearby Jewish landmarks The Ghetto area is home to five historic synagogues, including the Schola Tedesca (German Synagogue) and the Schola Spagnola (Spanish Synagogue), reflecting the diverse origins of the Jewish community over the centuries. These architectural gems are often accessible via guided tours departing from the museum nearby.
A short walk from the Chabad House leads to the Museo Ebraico di Venezia (Jewish Museum of Venice). This institution preserves a vast collection of silver, textiles, and manuscripts that document the artistic and cultural life of Venetian Jews. It serves as an essential stop for travelers looking to understand the timeline of the Jewish presence in Venice.
Modern Jewish life flourishes alongside these historical sites. The area contains kosher-certified bakeries and restaurants, allowing visitors to enjoy traditional Italian and Jewish-Venetian flavors. From the Ghetto, a quick vaporetto ride connects you to major city sights like the Rialto Bridge and St. Mark's Square, making it a convenient base for exploring the city's canals.
