About the area

Situated in the coastal city of Santa Cruz, Chabad By The Sea is positioned in an area known for its relaxed atmosphere and natural beauty. The center is located at 2052 17th Avenue, placing it between the bustling downtown area and the scenic coastline of the Monterey Bay. This location makes it accessible for those staying in local hotels or residents living in the surrounding Santa Cruz County area.

Santa Cruz has a long history of being a diverse and welcoming community. While it does not have a high-density Jewish neighborhood like those found in Los Angeles or San Francisco, Chabad By The Sea acts as a vital anchor for Jewish identity in the region. Its presence ensures that essential Jewish services and a sense of "home" are available to everyone from university students to long-time locals and vacationers.

Nearby Jewish landmarks

Santa Cruz provides a scenic backdrop for Jewish life, with Chabad By The Sea situated near several notable natural landmarks. A short drive takes visitors to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and the Municipal Wharf, both popular spots for families. The proximity to Monterey Bay offers opportunities for contemplation and the performance of Tashlich during the High Holiday season.

For those seeking spiritual connection in nature, the nearby Redwood State Parks, such as Henry Cowell, provide a serene environment for reflection. Within the city, the presence of the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) ensures a vibrant intellectual atmosphere, and Chabad often serves as a touchpoint for Jewish students and faculty looking for a traditional community connection away from home.

The neighborhood around 17th Avenue is predominantly residential and tranquil, allowing for a focused and peaceful environment for Torah study and prayer. While the Jewish population in Santa Cruz is spread out, the Chabad center serves as a central hub that bridges the gap between the various coastal communities in the region.
