About this listing

Chabad Of South County stands as a dedicated center for Jewish life, catering to both the local population of South Kingstown and the many visitors who frequent the scenic Rhode Island coast. Located on Main Street, this Chabad House provides a welcoming environment where individuals from all walks of Jewish life can find support, education, and a sense of belonging.

Led by Rabbi Mendy Reinitz, the center emphasizes a personal approach to Jewish engagement. Whether you are looking for a place to pray, seeking to deepen your knowledge of Torah, or requiring assistance with Jewish observance while traveling, the doors are open to provide guidance and hospitality. The institution serves as the primary Jewish address for South Kingstown and the surrounding coastal communities.

About the area

Situated at 77 Main St in South Kingstown, the center is conveniently located in the heart of the village of Wakefield. This central location makes it easily accessible for residents of surrounding towns such as Narragansett, Exeter, and North Kingstown. The building is positioned within a historic area characterized by local shops and community services.

Rhode Island’s Jewish community has deep historical roots, particularly in nearby Providence and Newport. While South Kingstown is known for its beautiful beaches and the University of Rhode Island, Chabad Of South County bridges the gap for those seeking Jewish infrastructure in the southern part of the state. It acts as a local hub in a region where Jewish resources are more dispersed compared to larger metropolitan areas.

Nearby Jewish landmarks

The Chabad House serves as a vital resource for visitors to the University of Rhode Island (URI), located just a short drive away in Kingston. This makes it a frequent stop for Jewish parents, faculty, and students seeking a connection to Jewish life during the academic year.

Nature enthusiasts often utilize the center as a base while exploring the scenic South County coastline. Nearby landmarks include the historic Point Judith Lighthouse and the Narragansett Town Beach. The center provides a spiritual anchor for those spending their summers in the coastal communities of Washington County.

While South Kingstown is more spread out than urban Jewish centers like Providence, the presence of Chabad ensures that travelers have access to essential Jewish services. The area's proximity to Newport also allows visitors to easily combine a visit to South Kingstown with a trip to the historic Touro Synagogue, the oldest surviving synagogue building in the United States.

What to expect

Visitors can expect a warm and inclusive atmosphere that reflects the classic Chabad philosophy of "Ahavat Yisrael" (love for one's fellow Jew). The center offers a range of traditional services, including synagogue prayers and holiday celebrations. The environment is designed to be comfortable for everyone, regardless of their level of religious observance or background.

For those traveling with families, the center provides various youth-oriented programs, including a Bat Mitzvah Club and "Mommy and Me" sessions. Adults can take advantage of regular classes, communal lectures, and the on-site Jewish library. The facility also plays a role in communal welfare through hospital and senior visitation programs, ensuring that no member of the community feels isolated.

Practical Jewish needs are also addressed through services such as kitchen koshering and religious instruction. If you are planning a visit to the area, reaching out to the Rabbi can help facilitate your stay, particularly regarding Shabbat arrangements or finding local kosher resources. The center operates as more than just a house of worship; it is a full-service communal home for the Jewish soul in Rhode Island.
