About this listing

Situated at the foot of one of Israel's most iconic historical landmarks, Hummus Eliahu offers a reliable dining option for travelers visiting Masada National Park. This establishment specializes in fresh, pareve hummus, providing a nutritious and traditional Middle Eastern meal in a region where kosher dining options can be limited. The restaurant caters to those looking for an affordable, high-quality meal after exploring the mountain fortress or hiking through the Judean Desert.

The menu focuses on simplicity and freshness, revolving around the classic hummus bowl served with various toppings. As a pareve establishment, it serves as a convenient stop for a variety of dietary needs, ensuring that visitors can enjoy a hearty lunch or dinner without the complexities of meat or dairy ingredients. Whether you are traveling as a solo hiker or part of a large tour group, the facility is designed to accommodate various party sizes comfortably.

About the area

Located within the Masada National Park visitor complex toward the South District, Hummus Eliahu is strategically positioned for those touring the Dead Sea region. This area is a cornerstone of Jewish history, where the mountain top remains a symbol of the struggle for Jewish independence. The restaurant is easily accessible for those arriving via Highway 90, the main artery connecting Jerusalem to the northern and southern reaches of the Dead Sea coast.

Travelers coming from Be'er Sheva or the Arad region will find this a convenient stopping point. While the immediate area is primary dedicated to the national park, the broader region is dotted with well-known landmarks such as the Ein Gedi synagogue and the various kibbutzim along the shore. The proximity to the Masada Youth Hostel and guest house makes it a frequent choice for those staying overnight in the desert to catch the famous sunrise over the Moab mountains.

Nearby Jewish landmarks

The surrounding Judean Desert is home to several sites of historical significance to the Jewish people. Masada National Park itself serves as a monument to Jewish heroism and resilience, featuring the remains of King Herod's palaces and the Roman siege works. Many visitors choose to hike the Snake Path or take the cable car to the summit before or after their meal.

Beyond the immediate archaeological site, the Dead Sea region offers unique natural attractions. The nearby Ein Gedi Nature Reserve provides lush desert oases and fresh water springs, while the various Dead Sea beaches offer the world-renowned experience of floating in mineral-rich waters. For those traveling south toward Be'er Sheva, the landscape transitions into the Northern Negev, an area rich in early Zionist history and modern desert agriculture.

What to expect

Guests can expect a casual and welcoming atmosphere suitable for all types of travelers. The service is designed to be efficient, acknowledging that many visitors are on a schedule to meet tour buses or reach the cable car. The dining area includes both indoor seating and outdoor options, allowing diners to enjoy the desert air while they eat. The facility is fully wheelchair accessible, ensuring that all visitors to the national park can dine without barriers.

The culinary focus is on authentic Israeli hummus, often served warm with freshly baked pita, pickles, and traditional condiments. In addition to the standard bowls, the menu typically includes salads and coffee, providing a full meal experience. Families will find the environment particularly accommodating, as the restaurant is known to be good for children and group gatherings.
