Israel and the Diaspora
In Israel, Sukkot has one day of Yom Tov at the start and Shemini Atzeret, which is also Simchat Torah, at the end. Outside Israel there are two days at each end, and Simchat Torah is the second of the final days. Travellers should follow the custom that applies to them and check with their rabbi.
When Yom Tov meets Shabbat
In 2026, 2027 and 2030, the first day of Sukkot falls on Shabbat, so there is no shaking of the lulav on that day. In 2028, the last days run Thursday to Shabbat abroad, creating a three-day Yom Tov and Shabbat block that needs an eruv tavshilin.
