À propos

The Rhine River stretches for hundreds of kilometers, beginning in the high, snow-capped peaks of the Swiss Alps.

It winds its way gently through Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, and the Netherlands, before flowing majestically into the North Sea. Along its 1,320-kilometer course are scattered ancient castles, picturesque villages, vineyards, rolling green meadows, and dramatic cliffs rising high above the riverbanks.

A river cruise is a wonderful and comfortable way to experience the pastoral landscapes, charming villages, and historic towns along the river—while staying in a “floating hotel” that offers the perfect combination of sightseeing and relaxed vacationing.

The river ship’s cabins are equipped with air conditioning, en-suite bathrooms, and showers. The professional and attentive crew provides full-board hospitality throughout the cruise. The tour, a kosher kitchen under the supervision of Rabbi Oren Dovdavani, guided tours at the ports of call, and daily prayers conducted on board with a Torah scroll.

This is a perfect opportunity to combine a breathtaking journey with a serene holiday experience, while fully maintaining a kosher lifestyle

ITINERARY

Day 1 (Monday) – Basel – Embarkation

Upon arrival in Basel, Switzerland’s second-largest city, we will enjoy a guided visit of the Old Town. Highlights include the Town Hall, Switzerland’s oldest university, and the city’s vibrant marketplaces. We will also visit the famous balcony where Theodor Herzl stood, as well as the site of the Zionist Congress.

In the afternoon, we will transfer to the river port, where the crew will welcome us aboard our river ship, which will serve as our “floating hotel” for the week ahead. Before dinner, we will enjoy a festive welcome cocktail.

Overnight on board.

Day 2 (Tuesday) – Strasbourg, France

Today we tour Strasbourg, the capital of the Alsace region. The Jewish community of Alsace is among the oldest in Europe, with traditions deeply influenced by neighboring Germany. Jews were expelled from Strasbourg in 1349 and were forbidden to reside in the city for over 500 years, until the French Revolution.

Very few remnants of medieval Jewish life remain, aside from a plaque near the opera house

marking the only gate through which Jews were once permitted to enter the city (but not stay overnight), and another plaque at 15 Rue des Juifs marking the site of the synagogue destroyed in 1349.

During our panoramic tour, we will pass the Grand Synagogue “Peace,” built in 1962, which also serves as a community center, view the buildings of the European Union institutions, and admire the city’s distinctive medieval half-timbered houses. We will stroll through the historic quarter and see a sculpture symbolizing the historical tension between Judaism and Christianity.

Overnight on board.

Day 3 (Wednesday) – Speyer – Mannheim – Heidelberg

We dock in Speyer, one of the famed ShUM cities (Speyer, Worms, and Mainz), designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known in Jewish history as Shpira, Speyer was among the earliest Jewish settlements along the Rhine and later suffered greatly during the Crusades. In the 12th century, it was a major center of Torah scholarship in the Holy Roman Empire.

We will enjoy a walking tour through the green gardens leading to the Old Town, visit Europe’s best-preserved medieval mikveh, and see the remains of the ancient synagogue in the Jewish Courtyard.

After lunch on board, we continue sailing to Mannheim, from where we drive to Heidelberg, one of Germany’s most beautiful medieval cities and a historic university town where Hebrew poet Shaul Tchernichovsky studied medicine. We explore the Old Town, view the 8th-century Old Bridge with magnificent views of the castle, and visit the memorial marking the synagogue destroyed on Kristallnacht.

In the evening, we continue sailing toward Rüdesheim.

Overnight on board.

Day 4 (Thursday) – Rüdesheim – Mechanical Music Museum – Koblenz

We awaken in Rüdesheim, a charming wine town famous for Drosselgasse, its narrow winding lanes lined with traditional wine taverns, surrounding vineyards, the Abbey of St. Hildegard of Bingen—renowned as the only known female composer of the 12th century—and the monumental statue of Germania overlooking the town.

We visit Siegfried’s unique Mechanical Music Cabinet Museum (time permitting). After lunch on board, we cruise through the most scenic stretch of the Rhine Valley, passing vineyards and castles en route to Koblenz, located at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers.

We take a walking tour of this 2,000-year-old city, surrounded by rivers and backed by four low mountain ranges. Its historic buildings, narrow lanes, cultural landmarks, and relaxed atmosphere along the river promenade make Koblenz an especially welcoming destination.

Overnight on board.

Day 5 (Friday) – Koblenz – Cochem – Cologne | Shabbat Songs & Festive Shabbat Dinner

This morning we travel from Koblenz to Cochem for a walking tour of this enchanting town. We stroll through narrow streets lined with half-timbered houses, see the preserved medieval gate, the local market, and admire Reichsburg Castle towering above the town.

We return to the ship for lunch while sailing toward Cologne, the largest city on the Rhine and Germany’s oldest city.

We prepare for Shabbat, and before dinner we gather with our accompanying musicians for traditional Shabbat songs, followed by a festive Shabbat dinner.

Overnight on board.

Day 6 (Shabbat) – Cologne | Walking Tour – Sailing After Shabbat

After Shabbat morning prayers and breakfast, we set out on a walking tour of Cologne. We will see the Old Town Hall, the main city square, historic plazas, and the former Jewish quarter. We continue along the city’s lively pedestrian shopping street, with its many shops and cafés, absorbing the vibrant atmosphere of the city center.

We return to the ship for lunch, followed by a restful and enjoyable Shabbat afternoon on board.

Overnight on board.

Day 7 (Sunday) – Amsterdam | Portuguese Synagogue – Canal Cruise

This morning we dock in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands and one of the world’s most popular destinations. The city’s charm lies in its beautiful streets, striking contrast between old and new, youthful and cosmopolitan spirit, and unmistakable Dutch character.

The 17th- and 18th-century buildings, countless bicycles, lively squares, tree-lined canals, and green parks all contribute to its unique atmosphere.

Jews began arriving in Amsterdam in the 15th century after their expulsion from Spain and Portugal, followed later by Ashkenazi Jews from Eastern Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, drawn by the Netherlands’ rare atmosphere of religious tolerance.

We visit the Portuguese Synagogue, built in 1675, where the philosopher Uriel da Costa was publicly absolved after recanting his views against Orthodox rabbinic authority.

After lunch on board, we enjoy a scenic canal cruise, offering wonderful views of historic bridges and houses.

Overnight on board.

Day 8 (Monday) – Amsterdam | Disembarkation

After breakfast, we bid farewell to our river ship and conclude our journey
