This resort lies on a lush peninsula 19 miles from San Juan, against the backdrop of El Yunque rainforest, tropical beaches, historical sights and many water sports.
We’ve listed different attractions and fun things to do both at the resort and nearby.
El Yunque Rain Forest
Discover a lush tropical escape by hiking El Yunque Rain Forest, noted for its remarkable biological diversity. The only tropical rainforest under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Forest Service, this verdant area shelters more than 400 plant species, many of which you can see by hiking any one of a dozen well-maintained hiking trails. An interpretative visitor’s center highlights the importance of this sprawling forest, while picnic pavilions ensure enough space to rest and contemplate the significance of this green kingdom in eastern Puerto Rico. Check the website for suggested family-friendly hikes and a printable brochure explaining the history of the forest. Before you head to El Yunque National Forest, plan trip itinerary details with our user-friendly El Yunque National Forest planning tool , to make sure you see all that El Yunque National Forest has to offer, including El Yunque Rain Forest.
Rio Camuy Caves (Parque de las Cavernas del RÃo Camuy)
The Rio Camuy Cave Park features a huge cave system covering 268 acres and is thought to be the third largest cave system in the world. A trolley bus transports visitors to a 200-foot deep cave, or sinkhole, which is now a preserved area known as Cueva Clara Empalme. The caves feature various rooms, in some cases with extremely high ceilings, stalagmites, and stalactites, and rivers rushing along the base. A guided tour leads visitors through the Cueva Clara Empalme. In addition to the natural wonders the cave system presents, it’s also interesting to note that the caves were used by the indigenous population long ago.
El Morro
The cliff-top fortress of El Morro is a must-visit historical site when in Puerto Rico. Construction on this military fort began in 1539, just a few decades after Columbus “discovered†the island and claimed it for Spain. Many tourists flock to El Morro to enjoy panoramic views and stunning photo-ops of the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors can stroll through the stone corridors, barracks, and tunnels and step back into another time. Don’t miss the doodles on the dungeon walls.
Old San Juan (San Juan Viejo)
Walking the streets of Old San Juan, with its lovely colonial architecture and imposing forts, is like stepping back into another era but with a number of modern conveniences. More than 500 years old, and the second oldest city in the Americas, Old San Juan is a mix of Spanish colonial history layered with present day Puerto Rican life. The entire area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with hundreds of restored 16th- and 17th-century Spanish colonial buildings. Today, visitors can dine, shop, or even stay in some of these beautiful old structures.
Culebra Island (Isla Culebra)
Although Culebra is often mentioned in the same breath as Vieques, this smaller island with beautiful beaches and lush hills has its own unique character. The pace here is unhurried and the atmosphere relaxed. Eco tourism is big on the island and many of the tourist establishments are run by expats. About 17 miles east of Puerto Rico and 12 miles west of the Caribbean island of Saint Thomas, Culebra is only seven miles long and three miles wide, with 23 offshore islands of its own. The area’s coral reefs are considered some of the best in the entire Caribbean.
Toro Verde Zip Line
Between flying across rainforest valleys, rappelling into empty space at the end of a rope bridge, and traversing across all kinds of rope bridges, this Toro Verde is a blast, which happens to be the largest aerial park in the western hemisphere. The real highlight here is the Superman zipline where you fly face-down, strapped in a custom harness. Simply awesome.
Experience the Magic of Mosquito Bay…The Brightest Bioluminescent Bay in the World
Please don’t leave Isla de Vieques without taking a tour of this magnificent and magical natural wonder. It will be a magical, priceless memory to remember for a lifetime. It is best experienced during a “New Moon†phase, so we’ve included an interactive moon phase calendar below to help you plan your trip accordingly. In the waters of Mosquito Bay there are organisms named Pyrodinium bahamense, Dinoflagellates (dinos). These “dinos†are responsible for this amazing natural phenomenon.
